Minnesota SCALE FAQs

What is Minnesota SCALE?

Minnesota SCALE is a regional workforce development program connecting university students with paid internships, mentorship, and other experiential learning opportunities in the defense microelectronics and semiconductor industry. The program is part of a national public-private-academic partnership led by Purdue University and managed by the Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division, with support from the U.S. Department of War.

Who Can Participate?

Minnesota SCALE is open to undergraduate and graduate students who meet the following criteria:

  • U.S. citizenship is required for participation in Minnesota SCALE internships and program activities.

  • Currently enrolled at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities, Metropolitan State University, or the University of St. Thomas.

  • Registered with the national SCALE program through your university’s point of contact.

Minnesota SCALE is a strong fit for students in engineering, physical science, mathematics, and cybersecurity fields.

What Opportunities Are Available Besides Internships?

Minnesota SCALE runs a range of exposure activities designed to help students explore the field and build connections before committing to a full internship. These include lunch-and-learns, industry mentoring, company site visits, bootcamps and workshops, an end-of-year showcase, and a student ambassador program at each university.

How Long Is an Internship?

Internships typically last 12 weeks. By mutual agreement between the student and the host company, some extend into a longer period, subject to continued availability of funding.

Fall 2026 internships are scheduled to begin October 5, 2026, and end December 11, 2026. The Spring 2027 internship period is anticipated to run February through May 2027.

How Many Hours Are Required Per Week?

Students must be able to commit to a minimum of 10 hours per week, including two days on site at the host company. Some internships offer up to 40 hours per week of paid experience.

Are Internships Paid?

Yes. Minnesota SCALE reimburses host companies for internship wages and approved tools and materials costs. Rates start at $30 per hour and increase based on experience and educational level.

Minnesota SCALE also provides a transportation stipend to cover approved commute costs, making it easier for students to reach their internship site.

When Can I Apply?

The Fall 2026 internship application process opens July 6, 2026, and closes August 3, 2026.

Spring 2027 internship applications are anticipated to open in November 2026. Please check back for updates.

How is the Program Funded?

Minnesota SCALE is supported through the U.S. Department of War’s national SCALE program, part of a broader federal investment in rebuilding America’s domestic semiconductor and microelectronics workforce.
